“A Path to Independence”

On June 29, 2009, Medina Creative Housing’s newest residents proudly cut the red ribbon commemorating the opening of their new home “Medina Creative Living”, a sixteen unit garden style subsidized apartment complex in a residential neighborhood yet close to shopping, services, transportation and recreation. Twenty young men and women now have a place to call home, many of whom are living independently for the very first time.

Their anticipation of the next phase of their lives and their sense of accomplishment could be clearly seen in the joy and smiles on their faces. Their parents, family members and advocates sat proudly in attendance as they watched their loved ones in awe and marveled in the strides being taken. Excitement and promise filled the air. Medina Creative Housing is pleased to be able to offer this new housing opportunity and path to independent living success.

A Special Home for David

David waited on Medina Creative Housing’s waiting list for three years for a home of his own.  Medina Creative Housing worked with David’s family to develop a timely transition plan from his parental home to independent living.

A residence was developed to specifically meet all of David’s needs and to assure success in his new home.  David receives assistance in his home from a part time caregiver through Medina Creative Accessibility, Medina Creative Housing’s direct care, respite, modification and supportive employment arm.

Removing the Barriers

For over a year, Medina Creative Housing searched for the perfect house for Courtney to enable her to fulfill her dream of independent living. Criteria included the ability to adapt the home to meet Courtney’s physical needs, close proximity to services, supports, shopping, recreation and located on a bus route.

Medina Creative Housing not only located and purchased the perfect home for Courtney, but designed and installed the ADA handicapped accessible modifications, which allow her to live barrier free.

Supportive Employment

Ashley has been formerly featured highlighting her path to independent living having progressed through Medina Creative Housing’s “Life Steps” Program into independent living with supports as one of Medina Creative Living’s newest residents. Today, Ashley is one of six individuals, and in fact the only female, currently participating in the Medina Creative Accessibility Property Maintenance Employment Enclave.

Ashley not only wears her tool belt proudly, she is mastering the use of these tools on a variety of tasks including: custodial, general carpentry, plumbing, lawn care, snow removal and preventative maintenance. Ashley is getting real life training experience while helping to maintain Medina Creative Housing properties. Ashley is employed and developing marketable skills that will serve her well in her future employment pursuits.

Life Skills Development

Ryan is enrolled in Medina Creative Housing’s “Life Steps” Program, offered through Medina Creative Accessibility and located at our Life Skills Center in Brunswick. This summer, he attended 4 weeks of the “Life Steps” Life Skills Training Summer Day Camp. For the past 2 years, Ryan has been enrolled in the “Life Steps” After School Program and attends this program 5 days a week.

Ryan is developing life skills, social skills and working on educational goals in his after school programming. Ryan’s parents have seen him make great strides in his personal development and self-confidence through participation in the “Life Steps” Program. They are very pleased that Ryan has found a safe, secure and nurturing place where he can work on his skills which will someday lead to his path to independence.
